It's because they used "metro area"... San Jose ranks really low in that population because there are two other large cities in it's back yard. Metro area is the city population plus the population that is socio-economically linked to that city. Anything just outside of San Jose is much more linked to San Fransisco or Oakland. If you look at population of the city or the urban region San Jose is in the top 10 in the US and top 7 in the MLS. That difference would significantly alter their score.

If that's how they are figuring out the soccer city its even a bigger joke of an article.
Is anyone really comfortable with this? I'm not. I think it's a bunch of bullshit that makes it look like the rest of the country was never into soccer and still isn't. This meme has really gotten out of hand.

It must really burn to be used as advertising for a corporate entity that won't let you have tickets for $5 on gameday, too.
As Matt Talley would say, "Oh, it burns!"
I also find the "Spring 2011" tag on all these pictures the height of hilarity. They're like a spread in a fashion magazine. "This Spring, jack-booting for the Paulson family will be in style, with a hint of urine-soaked trim."

Damn Hank and Merritt for besmirching my good name. Thank Jeebus I'm not actually related to those guys...
