'Lucky' Sounders ponder how to turn around Montero
« Thread Started on May 3, 2009, 4:47am »

Vote: How can it be turned around for the now 'officially' struggling Fredy Montero?
(SSE)

Look at the poll choices, vote and then return here to talk about how Fredy can regain some kind of form.

As for the 'lucky' part, we can't deny that we just got our first positive 'result' mainly due to good fortune, with a tip of the hat to Tyrone.

Another 'sounding board' point:

We can now say that our most-consistent, reliable Colombian import is...Jhon Kennedy Hurtado.

Being a fan of defense, I've actually thought this since day one. Even when Fredy was doing his flashy show against NY, it was Hurtado that had me thinking "long-term contract".

Had it been more than 1 choice selectable i would have said both bench him and a challenge by Le toux for the spot.

He needs a 'wake up call' to be sure, but the other side of that is how can a guy 'play through it' if he's on the sidelines?

Start him against the cRapids, in the USOC match, and let him smoke their reserves. And play him in all reserve matches between now, and the end of the month. He puts half a dozen in, in those matches, and he'll have his confidence back.

I could have used an "all of the above". I think the most positive thing for the team will be give Le Toux a tryout at forward. One thing we know about Seba is that he will work himself to death whenever he steps on the field. That's a good thing.

I also think that Seba would view a start at forward as a massive opportunity to make his case for the position and could work even harder, if that's at all possible.

The next reserves match is Tuesday May 5 against Seattle University at 1:15 PM at Starfire (officially closed to the public). I'd agree that with the week off it sure seems like Montero would start that match.

Scoring in bunches against SU is not that much of a confidence-builder for the 2008 Copa Mustang Golden Boot winner though is it? The reserves host Vancouver Whitecaps Residency of the PDL May 11 at noon, too.

You said it. It's obvious Fredy Montero has a ton of talent, and not just from what he has done during his short Sounders tenure. He comes with a pedigree. But he is also young. This is a very tricky psychological situation that Sigi has to deal with. It's hard to tell if any particular choice will make things better or worse for Fredy. Sigi has to light a fire under his ass, but he can't destroy him, either.

Maybe Montero and Ljungberg need to go on a hiking trip to Mount Rainier. Camp out for the night. Get some things sorted out. Listen to what the marmots have to say. :)

I don't think it's a lack of confidence issue. Since March, he's had too much confidence and has not a good distributing ball since. His play has been on the verge of completely selfish, and this has resulted in 10+ missed goal opportunities for Freddie, and that's being conservative.

If his floater goes in against KC, would he be playing any differently? I don't think so.

I've been disappointed in the lack of chemistry between the Fred's. Go back and watch the last 3 games, and you'll see it's been mostly a one-way street. Freddie is finding Fredy correctly, just not the other way around.

he looks way to relaxed in my opinion there is no urgency. i say bench him and bring him on at 45 against LA so he knows his spot is up for grabs just like everyone else on the field

Pez, his benching against LA isn't so much of an option but rather the result of seeing red. He's riding the pine for 90. Although a Roger for Nate at the 45 might be interesting.

He cant play any minutes against LA. Which is fine, because he needs some time to sort some shit out. I think that whole scandel might have messed up his concentration a little. But lucky for us this isnt the first game w/o him. I see Seba in his place, or the TOR line-up.

If Nate plays like he has been, I wouldn't be surprised if Roger WAS subbed in, early second half.

Very close in the voting:

Lots of different views on how to turn Montero around, but right now the leading choice is getting some heat on Fredy from a move to forward by Sebastien Le Toux.
