Yeah.. someone like "Party Boy" Pontius or Stefan Frei would be found near the spot of that pick.

Saw this link posted on another board Leonardo Gonzalez is Costa Rican Left back/winger he's 28 and has made 59 appearances for the Costa Rican National Team. If this is true it would be a solid pick up. I believe Gonzalez's back up for the Costa Rican National team is Gonzalo Seagares for the Chicago Fire, one of the better left backs in MLS. This could be a big upgrade at what I think is one of our weaker positions.

"lateral izquierdo"

I'm not big on Spanish, but I think we could use one of those. ;-)

With all the guys that speak Spanish our team might have to start taking Spanish classes. Sigi will have training sessions, shooting sessions, and then Spanish sessions. Dios Mio!

I think Pontius is going to win rookie of the year so far. he is the best rookie i have seen. zakuani might develop over time but he has not at Pontius' level yet, nor does he have the amount of influence on a match that Pontius has. I actually think Pontius deserves to be an all star this year. he's the best wing/outside player i have seen all season...granted haven't watched Houston yet.

He's no longer listed as being with his 'former club.'

Gonzalez actually plays for Municipal Liberia in Costa Rica, not CS Herediano. (I believe he formerly played for CS Herediano but switched clubs.)

He's been called up to Costa Rica's Gold Cup Squad, but actually wasn't called up for the most recent qualifiers. So he's probably a little behind Segares on the Costa Rica LB depth chart. Assuming Costa Rica makes it out of Group Stage at the Gold Cup, the soonest we'd see Gonzalez as a Sounder would probably be August 2nd @ the Galaxatives.

Still sounds like a solid pickup! Hope it happens. Do we have a senior international roster spot available? If not, Jarrod Smith's career with the Sounders could be short-lived.

Webiste link not working for me. Liberia are a 'small club' that play in a 6,500 seat stadium.

Might get eatin' up for this... but, do we really need a left back??? I know it has been an issue, but I wouldn't say we are weak at left back, we have a few decent options.

If we are making moves, a strong attacking striker would be nice. Montero's got finesse, but the red sea needs to part for him to run at people. Nate can hold the ball up, but he's not gonna beat too many people. And, when Seba's up front, he usually spends most his time chasing opposing players. I'd like to see a Wayne Rooney style forward, who just runs at people. (Anyone see Altidore's goal yesterday) I would also welcome another attacking midfielder, to provide support to Zak and Freddie, who aren't always available for games, or at least for a full 90.

From what I heard he wasn't called up by the national team because he got hurt while on trial with a Russian club team. He's played club ball for the last couple months and was called into the Gold Cup Squad so he looks healthy.

I can't find his contract status but if he went on a trial early this year then came back and played for a small club it may indicate that he signed a short term deal with eye toward transferring at the break. If that's the case this could be a good deal.

As to whether we need another LB I would argue we do. Wahl and Sturgis have both played Left Back but that's not their natural position. Scott is a decent defender but is not a threat to move forward or overlap on the left. Think about the number of times the attack has gone through the right with Riley then think about the amount of times we've started the attack through the left hand side. Ideally in Sigi's system the outside backs are making overlapping runs and sending in crosses that's happening on the right but not the left.

I agree that there are other places we need to add depth but none are as obvious as left back. Plus from everything I've seen Gonzalez is a very good Left Back and would be an upgrade over most of the players at the position playing in the MLS. I don't think you can say that about any of the men we have played at that position.

how is this alleged 'target' at set pieces and in the air? these are the most critical needs...someone to defend against the cross and then put balls forward from our set pieces

Jarrod Smith is not going anywhere. He has done nothing but shined when given the opportunity at 1st team action.

and we'd be silly to give up one of our toughest players...the MLS is a physical league. we don't have a lot of big bodies. plus we have all seen our injury prone the squad has been so far....i wonder when scott will be back...i kinda miss not seeing him at the back

Cracks me up that we all wanted Johann during the draft , now Jerrod's looking good and Johann's cut!

I don't think we absolutely need a left back, what we have is passable, but that's it, passable.

We should always be looking for an upgrade in every position and if this is one, then let's take it!
