Rumors of 2008 matches at Qwest
« Thread Started on Feb 7, 2008, 8:41am »

Never mind. Stupid Houston Chronicle.

Ok, I'm connecting the dots here, but check this out:

(U.S. Soccer Federation president Sunil) Gulati, in town to witness the U.S.-Mexico friendly at Reliant Stadium, also announced the Americans will host a top-five ranked team June 8 in the Northwest.

And here:

The current top 5 are Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Spain and Germany. Since all three European teams qualified for Euro 2008, which starts on 7 June, it is pretty safe to rule them out, which leaves the two South American powerhouses. The US men just played Brazil in the fall, and although I'm sure a lot of money was made out of it, I have a difficult time seeing the men in yellow back on US soil so soon. Which leaves me to guess the team for early June is Argentina.

And, where in the Northwest are they going to hold this game? Spokane? Portland?

Ives and Goff are saying northeast, not northwest, on June 8. So don't get your hopes up too high just yet.

The article says they are playing in Spain on June 4th...seems odd to hold another match 4 days later in the US??. It was nice to see Qwest mentioned in the WCQ semi-final venue discussion. To tell you the truth...Qwest is very underutilized as far as internationals are concerned; always LA, Chicago, DC...every year... and if the US really wants to have a sold out crowd vs. Mexico that might actually bring out more US supporters than Mexican...stop playing all the games in LA or Texas...I mean I know they want to make $$ but would Qwest not sell out for a US - Mexico game?

Weirdness. Never mind. Apparently the Houston Chronicle doesn't cotton to longitudinal directions.

The ratio might not be as bad as it is in LA or Texas, but don't kid yourselves... there's a LARGE Mexican population within driving distance here. If you don't believe me, check out all the taco busses/carts on highway 99 north of Seattle... or Highway 9 in Snohomish Co. Hell, half the stores up in my neck of the woods have signs and other stuff in both English and Spanish... tons of "se habla espanol" signs outside businesses... etc etc.

Not to mention all the agricultural workers in eastern Washington. And that's just Washington... Oregon has a lot too... Hillsboro (west of PDX) is turning into little Mexico.

There's only two ways to ensure we have home field: Either do like we did for the WCQ's in Columbus by utilizing a smaller stadium with a closed ticket ordering policy.... or get Yank fans off their arses and mass order tickets the minute the game's in the ticketing system.

We can now add a possible AEK Athens v. LA Galaxy match to the rumor mill, and a surprising international friendly match-up...

As much fun as seeing Mexico v. China would be, it's not real likely IMO.... since April 16th isn't a FIFA international date.

(Plus, it IS wikipedia :) )

RED-HOT EDIT: yeah I'm seeing this in a few places. Huh. Could be legit.

Yep, I fail at predicting.

Any word on the Galaxy vs. Greek Guys FC potential match?
