- Tacoma "(Red Bull Arena)"
A very nice small stadium. The MLS continues to think small on its capacity forecast? NY Red Bull Arena appears to be limited for possible expansions? - I know construction costs can be very expensive and return for the money in many cities are pretty low- but the NY Arena is located close to a densely populated area!
New MLS SSS stadiums should encorporate a design to allow expansion up to 85k seats? Design SSS for future growth- WC & international championships?? You don't have to build it out to full capacity to start!

I've heard this argument before about SSS and needing to build bigger for the WC. I just don't buy it.
Red Bull Arena is awesome, so close and amazing sight lines. If we had more of these types of stadiums in the core downtown areas, the MLS would be far more successful in my opinion.
We don't need to build bigger stadiums for the WC. The NFL has taken care of that for us. I can guarantee you that the new Cowboys stadium will host games there. The Rose Bowl will continue to host games. The new Giants stadium, Philly, New England, Seattle, Houston, LA if/when they build that damn thing, etc..
There are plenty of large venues for hosting WC matches

I said not to build it now, but plan and allow for growth in the arena! -the "Glass is half full"!
I guess that the FO of the Red Bulls assumes ~ 25k is the max number of fans in the NY area for the next ten years- so MLS popularity will decline or be stable at that figure??
Oh well I prefer to to be prepared! What was the pre-season (WAG) figures predicted for Seattle attendance?

If every team in the MLS averaged 25K a game that would put us among the highest attendances in the world. I'd rather have a 25K seat facility filled to capacity or near capacity than a much larger venue with empty seats abound.
The way the Red Bull Arena is designed, if they show up with passionate fans, that place will be ridiculously loud. If it was full of Sounders fans, it would be far louder than Qwest is.

In the BMO numbers section it was interesting to see that the grass field will have a heating system installed.
"34 Kilometers of 1.9-centimeter pex tubing for new field heating system"
I wonder how much it will cost them to keep the ground from freezing during Toronto's long winter?
It looks like all of this work is going to be all for not though if the Toronto Canadian Rules football team gets there way and moves into the stadium. The pitch will end up like Houston's.

Tacoma you are correct it is not big enough so they are looking at revamping the stadium to fit it in. In Toronto this is a huge thing between the CFL team and Toronto FC. It has been interesting to listen to what the controversy on "Its called football". I can not think of a worse thing that could happen to Toronto FC or their stadium.

that sucks for tfc fans.
and nyrb arena is nice looking, but way to small for my taste. 20,000 is saying that mls is not popular and never will be. you don't need an 85,000 seat arena, but is 40,000 asking too much. not imo.

Like someone said earlier the MLS owners and the city planners are not really interested in creating these SSS stadiums for the optimum atmosphere to host a EU or WC football match. There are plenty of "handball" stadiums with plastic pitches with greater than 55k cap. to play in nearby. Playing World Soccer in those lovely "handball specific" grounds is perfectly OK and we do not care what the real football fans think! Nobody cares about saving beyond 5 years for any future construction costs! They can always look at building a new stadium in another city and constantly move their clubs when dissatisfied with their current orgasm. In that way they constantly get gratification by sticking new tax payers for another stadium that actually meets their very short term goals.
We are talking about the MLS. The league continues to look short term so they cannot see beyond 25k each year- parity slows the growth for the next ten years.
Short-sighted in England: The top 12 teams in the BPL have greater than 27K and the top ten have ~33k in attendance. There are several older clubs in the BPL who regret not planning for the future. They are locked in for max attendance in their current stadiums and location. Some big clubs are ideally situated in the city but they cannot expand due to encroachment of houses around the stadiums.
If every team in the MLS averaged 25K a game that would put us among the highest attendances in the world. I'd rather have a 25K seat facility filled to capacity or near capacity than a much larger venue with empty seats abound.

I think Crikey's point is that it would be REALLY loud because 10,000 of our STH would be forced to stand out in the parking lot.
We don't have 35K STH--the FO goal is to have 30K. Can this be sustained in the long term? Time will tell.
That's still 5,000 more than a lot of these places can hold. The question is what do the Red Bulls do if they're actually successful? Where does the money come from to expand the stadium again?
