Yes we can disagree. But please, allow me to retort...
People in Seattle have not embraced the current USL Sounders for a number of reasons. I think the biggest two reasons are the serious lack of any real marketing effort, and the complete and utter failure to connect with the urban community in the region. Sure, they went out of their way for the Youth Teams, which is great. However, they did absolutely nothing to appeal to the 18 - 35 year old soccer fans in the area.
It looks like they are off to a great start with this MLS club as well...
Well, I don't know how much marketing one can do for what is essentially a minor-league team in a niche sport that had only 3,000 fans per game showing up. Where exactly would the money for that come from? If I were an owner, I sincerely doubt I'd put a whole lot of money into something that most likely won't give me much of a return. Especially if my eye was on the big prize - MLS.
The old Return of Investment argument. Like we have not heard that one a million times. I have been to almost every home match in the past few years. When they even bothered to do any marketing, the crowds doubled. One of the reasons they only averaged 3K a match was because many people did not know there was even a team to support
It is your opinion that it is a good idea to emulate the Euros. Why so? Does it all of a sudden make the MLS more legitimate? Does having every other team named "City Name FC" mean that we are for real? The Sounders name should of been on the ballot. If it failed, so be it. That is the main issue here.
Yes, that's my opinion. Obviously, you don't agree and I won't try to convince you otherwise. And for the record, I did say in my post that the Sounders name should have been included in the ballot.
No I don't agree. And yes, we do agree that the Sounders name should of been on the poll.
You know, I really couldn't give two shits about what some European club is called. You know why? It's not my club! If England started a baseball league and named them like their other sports teams, well then good on them. Who am I to care what happens on their side of the pond when it comes to sports.
Fine. But if you don't care what the Euros think, why lace your words with British colloquialisms like "Good on them?" Why do we often see the word "pitch" or "squad" on this forum instead of "field" and "team." Most likely because we know soccer is their game and we respect tradition enough to use the proper terminology.
Anyhoo, off to do some work. Nice chatting with you blokes though. You're all fine chaps, really, good on all of ya...
I'm sorry, but now you are just being a smart ass. I don't think my vocabulary has anything to do with how Euro teams name their clubs.

To be fair to Anderson, the team had already essentially folded when the bought it. Without a buyer (and no one else was in the picture), there wouldn't have been an '83 season. Of course, in retrospect, it was a fiasco, but he meant well enough.
Seattle Republic in a Democratic State/City? I'll only vote for this if the uniforms are revolutionary war era military style, triangle hats and all. Also, "Democracy in Sports?" Really it should read "Ologarchy in Sports" and the name should correlate with that. Maybe we could call them the "Bush Republicans"
Seattle FC: Quote:
we believe the MLS Seattle team should be about where we are headed tomorrow
Let's get real! I guess in our ologarchy future we'll just all be the same soccer drones: Toronto FC, Seattle FC, Philly FC, P-Ville FC, where does it end?
Seattle Alliance: Anybody hear the Darth Vader theme when you say that? And who is the Empire? (or, emporer...Oh I guess that's double-talk Garber). I swear I'll bust out laughing if the crest has either and X or a H through it (you know x-wing fighter and tie-fighter). Although, I guess we could nickname the lads the "blasters!" and the marching band could wear stormtrooper uniforms. Good for laser shows too.
Focus groups or no focus groups these ideas are just dumb. If Mr Roth, Carey, Leiweke, and even Adrian (thanks Adrian for standing up for us, sorry you lost the battle) want to enter MLS as a joke like the Clash, the Wiz, the Mutiny, and the Fusion (which by the way none of these names exist anymore, except for the Wizards, but they still changed the name) than I guess it's their millions to be thrown away.
I'm just a lowly 25+ year supporter that has invested quite a bit of time, money, and energy into the soccer history in Seattle. I guess that means absolutely nothing though.
Now that I have had some sleep and can reflect on my feelings from yesterday I now see the truth.
Emporer Garber want us to either join the empire (Republic) or be just a group of soccer clones (FC, futbol clones), or we are the rebel alliance (if we're not for them, than we are against them).
Maybe, just maybe Mr. (Hollywood) Roth has a George Lucas connection and its gone to Emporer Garbers head (helmet).
May the Force be with us!
Hey there's a name:
Seattle Force
(nah too many Star Wars referrences)

Why is everyone so worried? Clearly the "choices" have been stacked in order to have the team be named "Seattle FC". If that happens, just call them the Sounders. Everyone wins.

What is it with MLS that they're trying to force "Alliance" down every expansion team's throat? First it was SLC, now us, and probably Philly when their time comes.

I cant find a good e-mail address for MLS, but we can always call...
Major League Soccer 420 5th Avenue, 7th Floor New York, NY 10018 Phone: (212) 450-1200
the number is MLS and SUM, a recording answers and there is a staff directory... type in 4272 and you are sent to Garber's voicemail box.... 212 450 1259 is the phone number for his assistant Cynthia.
I just called and left Mr. Garber a message, I suggest you do the same.

I'm absolutely sure that they mean "republic" like Plato's Republic and not "Republican," like "Karl Rove's Republicans," sort of implying that the planned fan involvement scheme for the club democratizes the organization, making it a "republic" of sorts.
In the sense of direct fan involvement of management of the club, Seattle Republic makes sense. Lacking a decent alternative, I'm voting for Seattle Republic.

Yeah, yeah, we understand the Republic part, but, it remains to be seen how far they will take the direct fan involvement, and how effective it will be for the fans. Let's say Hanauer gets "voted" out as Manager, as an owner don't you think he will still have extensive involvement with the club and his opinion still carry the same weight? IMO this Barcelona thing is just PR and will not really affect how the club is run. If they really cared about what he fans had to say we would not be in position we are in today.

If they really cared what the fans had to say, they'd sell us a stake in the team.
