Hot rumor out of camp, Khano Smith traded to TFC for Jamaican defender Tyrone Marshall.
There were mixed reports on Smith, most recently thought he was said to have established a place on the right, so not sure what prompted this move.

This would be a GREAT move for SSFC; but only if Marshall is healthy. He's a proven MLS center back who would provide immediate experience on our backline. BUT, being 34 years old, we better make sure he's still got the legs.
He played 24 games for TFC last year, which is a very good sign.

Hope it happens, though Khano has been a real 'gent' so far in camp.

While we await official news, if there is to be some...here is an interesting article about Toronto's defense last year:
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/story/2009/02/06/f-toronto-fc.html
Simply put, Toronto's central defensive pairing of Tyrone Marshall and Marco Velez was dreadful last season, and their inept partnership was a major reason why the Canadian club allowed 43 goals, one of the worst defensive records in the league.
The Marshall-Velez tandem was a complete train wreck, a fact not entirely lost on Carver and general manager Mo Johnston. Although Carver and Johnston have stopped short of pointing the finger of blame at Marshall and Velez, both have not hidden the fact that the team is actively searching for reinforcements and hopes to sign a pair of new central defenders to bolster the back line.
"I've been honest and straight with [Marshall and Velez] and told them to their faces that I'm looking to improve this team, [that] I'm looking to bring in a central defender — if not one, possibly two. So, they're under pressure. They have to realize the situation," Carver said.

Haven't seen him play to comment personally but this quote from the aforementioned article makes me cautious
"It hasn't quite worked out that way, though. Marshall, a physical player and a tough tackler, has looked way over his head. He's slow and plodding, lacks pace and is routinely burned by speedy forwards."
Doesn't sound like an upgrade over what we may already have on the roster, save the MLS experience

As somebody who's watched a lot of TFC the last two years... yeah, Marshall's been thoroughly unimpressive. He's not an unintelligent player, just a physically overmatched one. It would be a small upgrade, if an upgrade at all, over what we have. (For what it's worth, he's been less awful than Velez, who was just abysmal last year.)

got to think there's better options out there than Marshall. 34 yrs old on his last legs... and if he takes up an international slot to boot... no thanks.

"Midfielder Khano Smith was not with the team Monday. Coach Sigi Schmid said the team is "working on some things right now that involve a couple of players," fueling rumors that Smith is on the trading block."

My educated guess is that they're working on a deal with RSL. Real has a hole on the left side (Andy Williams is oldddd), multiple international slots free, and quite possibly a defender to trade. (Ian Joy? Robbie Russell?) Since RSL *is* staying in the same hotel as Seattle, I wouldn't be surprised if the two were talking trade.

I hope this is right. As my views of Tyrone Marshal went from "not bad" after reading his bio, to "oh shit" after reading of his performance the last season and not having injury or anything to blame it on.
Having both the Roy Miller and Jeff Parke deals fall through has to have been a body blow to the teams plans. But given how aggressive they've been lately a solid trade with a team to exchange some of our depth in the midfield to bolster the back line would be sound. I hope it's better than Tyrone Marshall like those you describe, but I would still welcome another experienced CB onto the team.
