I think they will make the play offs, it may be the last spot, but I think they will do it.

It will be a season of ups and downs. The downs will carry the day, but not by much. So, I picked competitive but average. Keep this club intact for 2010, though, and watch out! (Maybe add a defender).

How do outsiders see it?

Not a particularly well-crafted poll, but the sentiment seems to be...that we won't suck. :)

I think that it is totally up in the air at the moment. All of the options on this poll seem possible, with the two extremes being least likely obviously. A lot depends on what kind of a start for the season we get. If we start winning out of the gate, almost anything is possible; but if we are without a win after a few matches it could be very very different.

I went with competitive but avg. as well. We are scoring too many goals pre season or not to be another TFC or RSL type expansion. Like finn said if we get hot anything is possible really but we are bound to have some bumps along the way this year. If we can play competitivly and be close to .500 Im content for an expansion club.

Yeah, I'm following in the same line of thought: Competitive, but average.

Fact of the matter is that we have a large amount of young, skilled players that are offset by a few experienced pros. There is bound to be a bit of that youthful side that shows itself in a negative way this season, but I don't see it dooming us to less than average.

Our offense has looked (sounded via live blog) great so far this pre-season; but we haven't yet come up against a quality MLS side in a regular season match. I don't doubt the POTENTIAL of our young players (Nyassi, Le Toux, Zakuani, Osvaldo, etc), but expecting them to be immediate All-Stars in MLS is a stretch, I think.

As someone else said, give these guys a year to gel, and add another key player, and WATCH OUT!

Edit: One x-factor not discussed is Freddie. If Freddie gets healthy, and back in top notch form, I am scared for the teams that have to face a Ljungberg, Montero, Jaqua attack....his form could be the difference between us being an exciting but average team, and a playoff lock.

With Keller in goal and the goal scoring potential of Zakuani, Montero, Jaqua & Freddie
I voted playoffs. I think home form will be important and dont think teams will enjoy coming to Qwest Field Xbox Pitch Fortress !

I voted wc title. After all, if we make the playoffs (which I think we can do), we are only 90 minutes away from the wc title game.

I cannot wait to actually put the ball in play. Don't get me wrong, live blog coverage is awesome but something tells me that I will enjoy march 19 a little more.

I voted for Contend for Playoffs. I think it all hinges on getting off to a good start and staying healthy.
I think early success will excelerate the on-field chemistry building process. And once on-field chemistry is found, we need to stay healthy to preserve it.

"Average" in MLS terms is playoff-bound. More teams qualify than don't. That's why I voted "competing for playoff spot," although I feel like we will be above average.

If I'm going to dream, I'm going to dream big: "Contend for Western title"

Realistically, I definitely think we'll be contending for a playoff spot. I can then hope that we'll really be clicking as a team by the end of the regular season and can make a run in the playoffs. If we can host a playoff game or two, nobody is going to want to come in here and play us.

I think we have the roster to make the playoffs, but for a couple reasons I think we'll finish just out of playoff position.

They are:
(1) Being a new team it'll take the first half of the season to get used to each other & really jell as a team, &
(2) once we've jelled, the 2nd half of the season is much more road-game heavy.

I think those 2 factors will conspire to keep us from getting all the points our talent on the field will deserve. Still I think we'll end up right around the cutoff line for making the playoffs.
