Sounders & 2009 US Open Cup
« Thread Started on Feb 23, 2009, 11:38am »

According to usopencup.com website, Seattle will need to go thru 2 MLS qualifiers to even get to a round of the Open Cup. The site suggests that the 1st qualifier is vs Salt Lake. Anyone have more details - home or away? Is this game part of the season ticket package?

I don't think that they are included in the season ticket package (if it's at home), but I think that season ticket holders will be given priority to purchase tickets.

Lets just say that if you want to purchase tickets, be prepared to drive to Utah.

Anyone know if these will be played at Starfire?

EDIT: Potential home games, I mean, of course.

Last year's MLS Open Cup qualifiers were all played at the home of the higher seed. If they do it that way again, SSFC would be on the road for both potential games because we'll be the lowest seed.

Really? Didn't we make it furthur than RSL last year? I want to focus on the Open Cup as it seems like a good opportunity to get into international ball

Thanks, GS.

So it looks like they're basing our seeding on our MLS finish from last year as opposed to our Open Cup finish. ::)

One more game at least :)

Actually, they're one and the same, which is "Did not compete" and therefore being treated as last place. Even though it feels like a promotion, the new Sounders are not the same club as the old Sounders who were a few PKs away from the final.

Just a word of warning, DCU still has to play in to the Champions League this summer. Our "berth" from going all the way with the Open Cup isn't necessarily the easiest road to the CCL... Still happy with the Open Cup win without a doubt. One of my favorite games I attended all year!
Just not the easiest road to navigate. But if you qualify I'm sure Sounders would be in an optimal position to host Cup matches as you've got Starfire and Qwest at your disposal... Good luck!
Last year I was actually salivating at the idea of DCU having to face the Sounders... Maybe luckily for us we didn't have to... ::) ;D ;D

I don't get it... why would the Sounders FC use Starfire for any games?

We'll wait and see in regards to match ups and what they do to improve Starfire Stadium, but a match vs. Benat Arsenal, as an example, is likely to end up there.

MLS clubs routinely ship out these matches, as they have never drawn well in MLS cities.

OK, so we're not necessarily going to be on the road. The seeding does not automatically determine where the game is being played, since the Red Bulls are away to San Jose and NY was a higher seed. I'd imagine the location of our game will be announced fairly soon.

It could be that the play-in games are bid on, just like the rest of the USOC matches. If so, I would think Adrian would do all he could to maximize the club's chances. Having been tantalizingly close to the finals the past two seasons, and being the quickest way into the CCL, Adrian may want to put a higher priority on the cup than most MLS sides do.

In the Open Cup you have to bid to host. Teams like the Revs, who know they don't really get a shit ton of support at home, and maybe not feeling the crap surface they play on have been happy to not play at home.
DCU, won a bid to host, but not at RFK as they were letting the field regrow at the time... There might have been some sort of other event scheduled at RFK as well, hence the conflict...
During the open cup clubs also don't have the luxury of weeks and weeks to sell tickets as the tournament progresses. Not saying the club doesn't have enough fans to sell plenty of tickets on short notice, but unless your front office is force feeding you "play in" tickets in your season package, you might find that some of the 20,000 strong have lives and family to attend to on some random wednesday or thursday evening with a week to two weeks best notice.
DCU had to play at the SoccerPlex in Germantown in the thick of rush hour... hardly ideal circumstances for a short notice weeknight game, but i think they were able to get 4-5 thousand people+ out on those nights. Seattle obviously has a more central locale in Qwest field making for less excuses about travel times for fans, but it doesn't mean Qwest will have kept their entire schedule clear for such a turn of events. Starfire may end up being a better bet on such short notice. Again I could be totally wrong, but my money is on the fact that the powers that be at Qwest probably lose money at this point if they don't reach a certain threshold.
Like how many beer guys do you let work on such short notice? Do you open all the concessions when you may only get 7,000 people at a game? Just saying, that just because you have a place to play it doesn't mean you'll be able to fill it without 10 months of selling tickets, and that the old Starfire might be a cheaper option in the end.
You might be looking for ways to recoup some of that Super Search dough, or pad that tampering fine... ;) ;) ;)
