The Crew received $100,000 in cash and allocation money from the Seattle Sounders in exchange for the Crew’s waiving of a non-compete clause in Sigi Schmid’s contract that allowed the former Crew coach to be hired by the Sounders.

I will reserve my decision on this matter until the end of the season because second guessing the guys who brought us an MLS side is tough and I want to give them a chance to let things pan out a bit.

I know money is tight in MLS, and allocation money specifically is valuable, but $100K doesn't seem too bad to me, especially for a coach of Sigi's quality. In my view, 100K could get us a pretty good player, but it's definitely not too much to get a great coach.

That is chump change. No matter who your 24 players are, they are not going to matter if you don't have a proven coach who can get the most out of each individual, provide the best team stategy, and guide the cohesiveness needed for success.

Tough to use the word "screwed" when we were able to acquire arguably the best coach in MLS as an expansion side.
100,000 in the scheme of things is a paltry number, considering the impact Sigi will have, and already has had.

if it's mostly cash, then sigi is well worth it and our owners have deep enough pockets, but if the allocation money is high or any of the money went against our cap, then I would say we got screwed by MLS and the f*cking crew who were just scared we would come in and knock them off the top in our first year.

OK, the "sCREWed" usage acknowledged...
Any way to find out how much ALLOCATION money was used, if any? Hoping very little, as you're right that is a major disadvantage for an expansion side.
we don't know if it cost us a player or not. was there a player we wanted but couldn't get because we didn't have enough allocation money?
For the sake of being mad at the sCrew, I am going to say yes.
Actually, expansion clubs get the most allocation of any club the year they come in, and Hanauer has said that we get two years to spend it.
Our hands did seem a bit 'tied' when it has come to the whole Parke / then getting Marshall thing. I can't pin that on this though, and we eventually got Hurtado.

100 grand in MLS is plenty of money. Hopefully the player's can make the coach look worth it... The minimum salary is sure to go up a tiny bit this year, and luckily a couple more senior roster spots will allow for a little bit higher quality of life for a couple deserving guys. Reading people talk about it being chump change, makes me wonder if you guys are aware of how little some of your boys will probably be making this year... Last year the bare minimum for developmental players was what? 12,900? You'd be better off working in the team store!

As GS-1 said, 100K can get you some decent players in MLS, so the question then becomes would the Sounders be better with a couple more midlevel defenders or another decent forward but with a lower quality coach, or are we better off without those players and with Sigi?
My feeling is while the defense could theoretically be shored up further, the team assembled so far is pretty good already and we still have some further cuts to go. I'd say a coach who know what he's doing and has the experience to build a team for the long term is more valuable to an expansion team than a few additional players. As it is, a real assessment is impossible because we have no idea who those other potential players might be or who would be coach if not Sigi.

Perhaps Chris Henderson should be held accountable instead of the Crew. He's the bonehead that brought about the tampering concerns in the first place. It's hard to consider being "screwed" when the problem is brought on by someone in the organization.

Crap defenders, will make Keller's life Hell. From all accounts the Sounders have some solid scoring threats. A great coach will get all his boys motivated but if you've got slow, stupid, or just plain unskilled defenders you'll be drinking a hell of a lot more than normal this season. I'm sure coach is worth the fine, but a little depth in the back will help if anyone gets hurt. Did I read elsewhere that Graham's on crutches?
