Anyone know what was going on between our normally calm cool get the job done Gardner and Hollywood United?
I took a look at that incident, on USLLive, and from what I could tell "the Jerk" was yelling something at him, after he scored, so Josh "applauded" him. As he was doing that it looked like some of the HU players took exception to it (or maybe thought he was directing it at them), and started saying something. Josh reacted by putting his arms out to his sides, with body language that said "what?". He may have also said something, but it's hard to tell, because his back is to the camera. But, even IF he said something back, that yellow card was total BS.

There were about 4 HUFC supporters that turned up (met them in Mad Pizza beforehand and bought them a pitcher for their trouble coming up here). "The Jerk" was one of them.
As I understand it, they also travelled to PDX and of course had a lot more to cheer about down there!

The Jerk was caught in pictures somewhere: young man with a yellow pom-pom on his head, and a really big megaphone that said 'the jerk' on the side. There were actually a couple of dozen Hollywoodites who came up for the game. They were just quiet. Droze's family had me take a picture of them after the game, even. They seemed in pretty good spirits, actually.

A booking may have been a bit too much, but it hard to tell without knowing what he said. In any case, responding to away supporters who talk shit is very unprofessional.

No, when I said he might have said something in response, I meant to the HU players, not the fans. His only response to the fans was applauding them. Nothing wrong with that.

So how do you know that he didn't say anything? I thought you were on the other side of the pitch like me. And a sarcastic clap is an unprofessional response.

It doesn't matter what Gardner said. The fact that he raced over to the HU bench at all, and the fact that while he was doing it Schmetzer started screaming at him, I thought the yellow was completely justified. Regardless of what he said, his actions were unprofessional.
On the other hand, Noah Merl deserves a lot of credit for keeping his cool while being continually shoved and kicked and pulled by the left midfielder from HU. Especially when he had the ball kicked right into his stomach on purpose... incredible that Merl kept his head about him.

http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/06/3....o-play-at-home/ The 3rd round of the U.S. Open Cup kicks off tomorrow, and if you're looking for the MLS clubs that are taking this tournament seriously this year, just look for which clubs are playing at home.
Unlike England's FA Cup, where the home team is determined by random draw, MLS and USL clubs place bids with the U.S. Soccer Federation to host games, and the highest bidder plays at home. If you look at the schedule for tomorrow's games, you'll notice that the New England Revolution, the Chicago Fire, D.C. United and FC Dallas are all playing at home.

from the club...
SOUNDERS TO PLAY CHIVAS USA OF MLS TUESDAY NIGHT AT STARFIRE
(Seattle, Wa)- The United Soccer League First Division Seattle Sounders host CD Chivas USA of Major League Soccer in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup this Tuesday, July 1. Kickoff at Starfire Sports Complex is set for 7:00 p.m. PT.
Four goals from striker Sebastien Le Toux helped Seattle defeat amateur club Hollywood United 6-0 in round two of the Open Cup and earn the right to play MLS side Chivas USA.
The ‘rematch’ marks the fourth all-time meeting between the two clubs, and second in the Open Cup. Chivas USA traveled to Seattle in Open Cup third round action less than a year ago- July 18, 2007- with Seattle earning a 3-1 upset victory in front of the home crowd at Qwest Field. Sebastien Le Toux scored two of his tournament high five goals in the match, the most since Abdul Thompson Conteh of DC United scored five in 2001.
The Sounders also challenged the Red-and-White in two exhibition matches, both played in Seattle. May 6, 2006, Seattle was defeated 1-0; current Chivas USA striker Maykel Galindo played for the Sounders in that match. The next season, Galindo jumped to the side of Red-and-White, and scored a goal in a 3-1 victory over his former team played on June 2, 2007. Galindo will be absent Tuesday night with a sports hernia.
Tuesday night’s game will be the first 2008 Open Cup match for Chivas USA. Eight MLS teams qualify for the Open Cup, and enter play in the third round. This year’s MLS teams include: Chicago Fire, Chivas USA, DC United, FC Dallas, Houston Dynamo, Kansas City Wizards, New England Revolution, and New York Red Bulls.
In 2007, a record five MLS teams were upset in the third round, with only three clubs advancing to the next round.
Tickets are on sale at www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets are $17 in advance of the game, and $20 on the day of the game. $15 group tickets are available by calling 206-381-7908. Due to limited seating at Starfire, fans are encouraged to buy tickets in advance.
About Chivas USA
Founded on August 2, 2004, as MLS’ then-eleventh team, Los Angeles-based Club Deportivo Chivas USA is sister team to the famed Club Deportivo Guadalajara, popularly known as Chivas, Mexico's most beloved soccer club. As the only Mexican-owned team in major professional sports in the United States, Chivas USA brings a boldly different approach to the American sports landscape, centered on five core values: Passion, Heritage, Competitiveness, Inspiration, and Community.
Chivas USA is coached by Preki Radosavljevic. A two-time MLS Most Valuable Player (1997 and 2003, the latter at age 40), Preki earned MLS Coach of the Year honors in 2007, his first season as a head coach at the professional level, after leading the club to a 15-7-8 record and first place in MLS’ Western Conference. Preki represented the United States at the 1998 World Cup and 1998 Gold Cup, where he scored the Americans' lone goal in the historic 1-0 win over Brazil.
The team is currently in fourth place (18 points) in the Western Conference of MLS, just three points behind conference leader Los Angeles Galaxy. The team most recently drew 1-1 with the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night. Midfielder Sacha Kljestan leads the team in goals and assists; five and three, respectively. In goal is Brad Guzan, who in 2007 had 13 shutouts in 27 games.
Sounders Ties
Featured on the Chivas USA roster is former Sounders striker Maykel Galindo, who played 1,023 minutes for Seattle, scoring five goals, none more important than the equalizer in the 2005 USL-1 Championship, which Seattle won on penalty kicks.
Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer and Chivas USA coach Preki Radosavljevic played together for the Major Indoor Soccer League side Tacoma Stars from 1988-90.
Potential Quarterfinal U.S. Open Cup
Victory means Seattle will face the winner of the MLS Kansas City Wizards vs. USL-1 Carolina Railhawks at Qwest Field in the quarterfinals July 8.

No way Guzan plays... Chivas has tons of games (that they value as more important) coming up in the next few weeks. They probably will sit Razov as well, even if he's healthy.

Don't be so sure about that... Chivas surely are going to take this game much more seriously than last year as they know anything less than a full effort will result in them getting embarrassed by lower division opposition again.
I'm not saying their full starting XI will roll out there, but surely there's some pride/revenge factor at play and their fans will demand a better effort than previous years.
